An adult probation/parole officer is required to have a Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in criminal justice or one of the social or behavioral sciences.
Knowledge and Expertise:
An adult probation/parole officer must possess effective communication, writing and basic counseling skills. The PO must also be able to combine these skills with the investigative and supervisory abilities required for the position. An applicant should possess a general knowledge of the criminal justice system.
Student Internships
The Montgomery County Adult Probation and Parole Department accepts student interns into the agency. The student should preferably be a junior or senior enrolled in an undergraduate internship program who is majoring in criminal justice or one of the social or behavioral sciences.
The student intern will assist an adult probation/parole officer in the performance of the PO’s duties while earning credits from the university or college. The student will receive exposure to all aspects of the department’s work. If necessary, the student may serve as an acting PO if a vacant position exists.
